Her long blonde ponytail swung as she leaned up, wrench in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEngines don\u2019t fix themselves,\u201d Ricki shot back with a smirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobbie slid out from under the car, wiping her hands on a rag. \u201cYou just like the sound.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricki didn\u2019t deny it. The roar. The vibration. The way a machine comes alive when you touch the right parts in the right order. Power wasn\u2019t loud to her \u2014 it was precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the shop, Frankie kicked the compressor on, the sharp hiss cutting through the quiet. Short dark hair tucked under a backwards cap, she grinned as the first engine of the day turned over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMusic,\u201d Frankie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three of them moved like they\u2019d rehearsed it \u2014 no wasted motion, no hesitation. Ricki climbed into the driver\u2019s seat of the rebuilt muscle car and twisted the ignition. The engine coughed once, then thundered to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sound filled the shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricki stepped out slowly, leaning against the door as the motor idled smooth and steady. Sweat traced down her collarbone. Grease marked her thigh. She didn\u2019t look polished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She looked earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobbie walked over, arms crossed, eyes scanning the vibrating machine. \u201cTold you she\u2019d run.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricki tilted her head. \u201cI didn\u2019t doubt it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frankie shut off the compressor and joined them, the three standing shoulder to shoulder as the engine purred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside, the sun was finally cutting through the open door, lighting the dust in the air like sparks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ricki glanced back at the car, then at the street beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s see what she can really do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the garage wasn\u2019t where she proved herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was just where she prepared.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The garage door rattled open before sunrise.
